The Oblate Library: A Library with a View

Located in the heart of Florence, just steps from the Duomo, The Oblate Library offers a place for community, studying, and amazing views. A quiet escape from the busy streets of Florence, this library is the perfect place to study, and much more.

History & Importance

The Oblate Library was not always a library. It is housed in a historic complex that was once part of Florence’s first major hospital, founded between 1285 and 1288 by Folco Portinari. The hospital’s name comes from the Oblate, a group of female nurses inspired by Portinari’s caregiver, Monna Tessa. These women dedicated their lives to caring for the sick, as well as managing everything from linen care to preparing food. Unlike traditional nuns, they didn’t take religious vows, so they had the freedom to leave if they chose. It wasn’t until after World War II that the Oblates officially became a religious order. The complex also included Santa Maria in Campo, a church that housed a shelter for women, while a separate men’s care facility, Santa Maria Nuova, was built across the square. In 1625, an underground passage was added to connect the two, allowing the nurses to move between them easily. Today, Santa Maria Nuova is still a working hospital, while the Oblate complex has transformed into the Oblate Library.

More than just a Library

In 1936, the Municipality of Florence restored the former Oblate convent and moved the city's public library into the space. Since then, it hosts historical and scientific institutions but is also a favorite study and hangout spot for locals. It spans three floors, with 280 study spots available.

Whether you’re studying, reading, or just grabbing a coffee from the café, it’s an amazing spot to admire the beauty of Florence. The library itself is bright and welcoming, with free Wi-Fi, plenty of reading spaces, and a quiet atmosphere. In the summer, events take place in the cloisters, terraces, and garden, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds, soak in some history, and enjoy one of the best hidden gems in the city.
