A preparation course for IMAT - International Medical Admissions Test

Updated March 2023

What is the IMAT test?

The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is the official admissions test to access the medicine and surgery degree courses taught in English by some Italian universities.

It is official that the IMAT will no longer be written by Cambridge, however, the test will still go ahead. You can ignore the rumors that the test will be abolished!

Who will be the new writer? At the moment we don't know, the Italian Ministry of Education could write it alone (this was the case for the admission test to the medical school in Italian) or it could be entrusted to another exam editor (similar to before, except which will not be Cambridge).

The Leonardo da Vinci Schools in Rome and Milan organise a specific course for IMAT preparation, to provide a basis of scientific and logical-critical skills to all foreign students wishing to take the IMAT, to be able to enter a faculty of medicine in Italy.

Is the IMAT exam in English?

Yes, the test is used to assess scientific knowledge (maths, physics, biology and chemistry), logic and general knowledge, but it also evaluates the student’s level of English language, given that the degree program is entirely in English.

Which Italian universities offer degree courses in Medicine and Surgery in English?

At the moment, the academic programme for Medicine and Surgery in English is offered by the Universities of Bari, Bologna, Messina, Milan and Milan Bicocca, Pavia, Rome La Sapienza, Rome Tor Vergata, University of Naples Federico II and the Second University of Naples Vanvitelli and the University of Turin.

How many places are available for degree courses in Medicine in English in Italy?

The degree course in Medicine and Surgery taught in English is difficult to access mainly because the places available are very limited, last year they were just over a thousand for over ten thousand candidates. The available places have not yet been announced.

For this reason, we offer a specific English language preparation course to ensure you pass the IMAT entrance test.

How many questions is the IMAT test made up of?

The IMAT admissions test consists of 60 questions divided as follows:

  • 10 general knowledge questions;
  • 10 logical reasoning questions and problems;
  • 15 biology questions;
  • 15 chemistry questions;
  • 10 physics and math questions.

The questions are multiple-choice (with 5 possibilities and only 1 right answer).
The test has a maximum duration of 100 minutes.
The maximum total score is 90 points.

The answers are assessed as follows:
1.5 points for each correct answer;
-0.4 points for each wrong answer;
0 points for each question not answered.

What is the registration deadline for the IMAT test?

The IMAT test will be held in September (date to be confirmed). Students can enroll from July 4th.
Registration must be made online together with the payment of the registration fee.
