In cities with an industrial vocation such as Turin, August has always been the month of holidays. But in the last years the trend has changed and August, perhaps, is one of the best times to visit the first capital of Italy. Residents' holidays give tourists a lively but not crowded city; full of promotions, especially on accommodation and museums.
Once in Turin, you can't miss the Egyptian Museum, which is the second in the world for Egyptian finds. This summer, you can take advantage of the extraordinary evening opening: every Saturday in August it will be possible to access the Egyptian Museum from 6 pm to 10 pm and the ticket, to be booked exclusively online (www.museoegizio.it), will cost only € 5.
In addition, thanks to the installation of numerous QR codes along the museum route, it will be possible to use your smartphone as an audio guide.
Another significant news of summer 2022 is the inauguration of the Egyptian-style garden recently set up in the courtyard of the building where the museum is located. For the bicentennial celebrations (2024), which include ambitious structural transformations, the project "Open Courtyard: Flora of Ancient Egypt" was launched.
Conceived and edited by the international team of Egyptologists working for the museum, the space was created to welcome papyrus, palm trees and lotus flowers and to reproduce the gardens pictured in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians. In short, a project between archeology and botany, a true homage to the Egyptian civilization, was among the first to conceive a garden culture and attribute symbolic value to plants and flowers.
The space, with the interventions planned for the bicentenary celebrations, is destined to expand and become a permanent and new meeting point in the city.
But what to do after immersing yourself in all this culture? The summer thermometer suggests cooling off with good ice cream. The obligatory choice is the Gelateria Pepino 1884, nearby Piazza Carignano. This gelateria has just been included in the Historical Places of Italy list.
Here you can try one of the many flavors of the "Pinguino" (penguin), which is the revolutionary progenitor of all ice cream on a stick covered with chocolate, which was invented and patented by the owners of this place in 1939. But this is a story that we will tell you another time …
Un sabato sera d’agosto a Torino? Al Museo egizio! E dopo…. un fresco gelato!
Agosto si sa, nelle città a vocazione industriale come Torino, è sempre stato il mese delle vacanze, quello in cui le città si svuotavano fino a diventare desolate. Oggi fortunatamente non è più così e agosto, forse, è proprio uno dei periodi migliori per visitare la prima capitale d’Italia. Le vacanze dei residenti, infatti, regalano ai turisti una città vivace, ma non affollata; ricca di promozioni soprattutto su alloggi e musei.
Non si può venire a Torino e non visitare il Museo Egizio, che è il secondo al mondo per l’importanza dei reperti e che nel 2024 celebrerà il suo primo bicentenario. E soprattutto quest’estate, bisogna approfittare della sua apertura serale straordinaria: tutti i sabati di agosto, infatti, sarà possibile accedere al Museo Egizio dalle 18.00 alle 22.00 e il biglietto, da prenotare esclusivamente online (www.museoegizio.it), costerà solo 5€. In più, grazie all’installazione di numerosi QRcode lungo il percorso museale, sarà possibile utilizzare il proprio smartphone come audioguida.
Un’altra grande novità dell’estate 2022 è l’inaugurazione del giardino in stile egizio recentemente allestito nel cortile del palazzo in cui ha sede il museo. In vista delle celebrazioni per il bicentenario, che prevedono ambiziose trasformazioni strutturali del museo, è stato avviato il progetto “Cortile Aperto: Flora dell’antico Egitto”.
Pensato e curato dalla squadra internazionale di egittologi che lavorano per il museo, si è creato uno spazio per accogliere papiri, palme e fiori di loto e riprodurre l’allestimento dei giardini raffigurati nelle tombe degli antichi egizi. Un progetto, insomma, fra archeologia e botanica, un vero omaggio alla civiltà egizia, che fu fra le prime a concepire una cultura del giardino e attribuire valore simbolico a piante e fiori.
Lo spazio, con gli interventi previsti per le celebrazioni del bicentenario, è destinato ad ampliarsi e diventare permanente e nuovo punto di aggregazione in città.
Ma che fare dopo essersi immersi in tutta questa cultura? Il termometro dell’estate suggerisce di rinfrescarsi con un buon gelato. La scelta obbligata è recarsi nella vicina Piazza Carignano, dove sorge la Gelateria Pepino 1884 che, fra le altre cose, è stata appena inserita nella lista dei Locali Storici d’Italia.
Qui si può provare uno dei tanti gusti del Pinguino, cioè il rivoluzionario capostipite di tutti i gelati su stecco ricoperti di cioccolato, che fu inventato e brevettato dai titolari di questo locale nel 1939. Ma questa è una storia che vi racconteremo un’altra volta…
