Learning a language doesn’t just mean studying grammar books, it also means living the language. And what better way to do that than with a great Italian movie?
Our teachers have put together the perfect list to help you learn Italian while having fun! Not all films are suitable for every level: some have simple dialogues and everyday situations, while others require more attention and a more advanced vocabulary.
Levels A2–B1
For beginners, it’s best to start with light stories that are easy to follow.
Quo Vado? (2016)
A film starring Checco Zalone, the king of modern Italian comedy. The story follows a man who is desperate to keep his “permanent job,” even if it leads him into absurd situations around the world. The jokes will make you laugh, even if you don’t understand every word.
Benvenuti al Sud (2010)
A Northern Italian office worker is transferred to Campania and discovers that life in the South is very different from what he expected. The film pokes fun at Italian stereotypes, making you laugh while you learn about cultural differences between Northern and Southern Italy.

Level B2
Now it’s time for films with slightly more complex plots, suitable for intermediate learners.
Il Grande Giorno (2022)
A dream wedding… that of course turns into a disaster! Aldo, Giovanni, and Giacomo, three very popular Italian comedians, lead you through a comedy full of unexpected events. This film lets you hear real Italian, the way people speak at home and with friends.
Freaks Out (2021)
If you like superheroes and epic stories, this film is for you. During World War II, four circus performers with special powers struggle to survive through adventures and dangers. The story keeps you hooked from beginning to end, and the language is a great way to expand your vocabulary.
Level C1: Italian Auteur Cinema
At an advanced level, you can watch more complex films that explore society, history, and Italian traditions.
Rocco e i suoi fratelli (1960)
A classic by director Luchino Visconti. It tells the story of a family from Southern Italy moving to Milan in the 1950s, facing dreams, sacrifices, and dramatic conflicts. The film is intense, emotional, and full of rich dialogues that let you experience Italy of another era.
Pranzo di Ferragosto (2008)
A simple but delightful film. Gianni, a calm middle-aged man, ends up spending Ferragosto, the most beloved summer holiday in Italy, with a group of elderly women. The story is sweet, ironic, and very Italian. Watching it, you’ll feel like you’re invited to the table yourself, discovering Italian traditions and everyday culture.
Choose the right film for your level, turn on Italian subtitles, and enjoy your journey through Italian cinema!
