Art is at home in Florence; you can breathe it everywhere in its churches, museums, and small streets. And so, on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the death of Giorgio Vasari, the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci of Florence is celebrating the art and ideas of this great artist with a week entirely dedicated to him.
Vasari: an artist-intellectual from Arezzo who spent years studying and gaining experiences in Arezzo, Rome, Venice, and particularly Florence, where he served at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo I. He successfully merged various forms of art, demonstrating expertise that spans Drawing, Painting, Architecture, and Writing
Between 1550 and 1564, he published "The Lives of the Artists," an important text that elevated him to "First Historian of Italian Art!".
In 1563, Vasari founded the Academy of Art and Design, which is still active in Florence. He also carried out important architectural works, such as the renovation of the Palazzo Vecchio's rooms, the creation of the Palazzo degli Uffizi, and the Corridor up to Palazzo Pitti, which bears his name "Corridoio Vasariano." It is said that among the various reasons that induced Cosimo to realize the work (a private and safer passage to move from Pitti Palace, their residence, to Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of government, and his son's marriage), the protests of the Medici ladies had a significant influence. They were tired of walking across the Ponte Vecchio, then home to a smelly market, due to the presence of butchers' shops. And so Vasari was entrusted with the realization of this elevated passageway about 1 km long, replacing the old shops with new jewelry stores, more decorous and appropriate to their standing.
Vasari also realized the project and executed the frescoes of the Brunelleschi Dome in the Cathedral of Florence, the decorations of the Sala Regia of the Vatican in Rome, and the decoration of the Ceiling of Palazzo Corner in Venice. But it is above all in Arezzo, his hometown, where his influence is most profoundly felt!
The Study Week dedicated to him will include classroom lessons, readings of his Lives, and, above all, visits to Exhibitions, which, we hope, will transport the students to that glorious Renaissance that opened art to the birth of the "Modern Manner."
