After spaghetti, pizza is the most famous Italian dish in the world! Its history is long, complex and uncertain. The only certainty is that it was born in Naples.

In the sixteenth century in Naples there was a crushed bread called il pizza which derives from the word pitta (a focaccia prepared with the bread dough)

The origin of Pizza Margherita

The legend says that pizza was born in Naples on 11 June 1889, in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, who was visiting Naples with her husband, Umberto I of Savoy, king of Italy.
On that occasion, the pasta artisan, Raffaele Esposito, was asked to join the royal family in the sumptuous palace of Capodimonte. Here Raffaele prepares three variations of pizza, including his new creation: a pizza garnished with red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil, to represent the national colors of Italy.
Queen Margherita is so entranced that the chef decides to baptize that pizza with the queen's name: Pizza Margherita.

Today there are many varieties of pizza: ham and mozzarella, the Neapolitan with the addition of capers and anchovies, the vegetarian, the marinara with only garlic and tomato…
