There is a magical neighborhood in Turin, which looks like a small town in the city. Here, art hangs on the facades of the houses and people still sit in the courtyards of the houses to chat, along the cobbled streets, it is possible to come across characters and curious activities, such as the Ciclo Officina Literaria or the Association of Sardinians of Turin.
It is Borgo Vecchio Campidoglio, a working-class district born in the mid-19th century at the confluence of Corso Svizzera, Corso Appio Claudio and Corso Tassoni. Between low houses and streets made of slate and cobblestones, it seems to relive the atmosphere of a Piedmont of the past. Borgo Campidoglio, in a decentralized position without being peripheral, is an essentially residential area made up of small houses, squares, artisan shops and restaurants. Here people meet and greet each other, organize neighborhood dinners and help each other, create a book crossing inside a disused telephone booth and even commit to an eco-sustainable future.
What most distinguishes this corner of city paradise is the presence of many murals and art installations set on the walls of the houses, on fake windows, between the house doors, shop shutters, benches, garden walls and many other places.
Borgo Vecchio Campidoglio is the headquarters of the MAU - Museum of Urban Art of Turin: the first open-air contemporary art museum in an Italian urban center. In this incredible space, you can admire over 170 works by artists who have left their mark here: you will happen to come across flying whales, mountain landscapes, portraits, giant children playing football, trompe-l'œil, flowers growers and benches inspired by the great masters of contemporary world art. Through the MAU it is possible to book guided tours, including by bike and with the artist.
Absolutely not to be missed is the neo-baroque Church of Sant’Alfonso Maria de 'Liguori, which stands majestically and imposing on the small houses of the Turin neighborhood.
And after visiting the village you have to indulge in an evening of conviviality sipping a craft beer at the Dogana in Turin, or dining in the typical Piedmontese piola (tavern) "Il Torchio", or enjoying - in summer - the pergola of the Ratatui Restaurant. And to conclude, some live jazz music at the historic "Magazzini di Gilgamesh".
