Discover the Monferrato area with the artistic itinerary through the Fossils by artist Giorgia Sanlorenzo

If you think that discovering the secret beauty of Piedmont through the Big Bench itinerary has become a somewhat inflated experience, the Monferrato area will surprise you with the Terre Emerse project by young artist Giorgia Sanlorenzo from Casorzo.

Who is Giorgia?

A graduate of Turin’s Accademia Albertina, the young sculptor’s idea was to bring back to life the prehistoric past of the Monferrato area. Millions of years ago, what is now the Po Valley was a sea, as evidenced by the numerous fossils and shells that are found almost everywhere in the Monferrato. In the cellars of Palazzo Callori, in the beautiful village of Vignale (not far from where the artist was born), a shark tooth is said to have been found. It is no coincidence that in Asti a Paleontological Museum has been set up, which houses numerous findings including skeletons of whales and dolphins dating back to the Pliocene era (between 5.3 and 1.8 million years ago) which have been found nowhere else in the world.

So Giorgia Sanlorenzo, imagining the rolling hills - now covered with vineyards - like the waves of a peaceful green ocean, decided to bring the ancient sea creatures of the Monferrato back to their place of origin. The result is an interesting artistic project with carved iron sculptures, called “fossils”, reproducing shells and fish.

The fusion of art and nature

The installations are placed in a natural context of exceptional beauty, often in spaces made available by farms and wine producers. The website is devoted to Giorgia’s sculptures and the locations that welcome them, and also features a very useful interactive map.

This allows us to reach practically untouched places, absolutely outside the routes of mass tourism, and meet local producers.

We especially recommend you try a glass of the extraordinary aromatic wine called Malvasia di Casorzo: we are sure that after you try it, you will come back to it again and again, as the perfect accompaniment to any desserts.
