On March 18, we celebrate World Recycling Day, a perfect opportunity to ask ourselves: what can we do, in our small way, to help the planet? This day is the perfect time to reflect on our habits and discover how we can make them more sustainable!
The Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Milano is part of Green Standard Schools (GSS), a global association that certifies language schools committed to sustainability. The goal? To help schools become greener, reducing their environmental impact and making sustainability an essential part of school life, both inside and outside the classroom!
But what does it really mean to be a Green Standard School?
Let’s see it in action with the example of Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Milano!
Plastic-free water – Students can refill their bottles with microfiltered water directly at school, reducing plastic use. And it doesn’t end there: with a small donation, they can receive a special bottle while also supporting an organization that creates more sustainable urban spaces!
Eco-friendly materials – The first-day school kit includes a reusable tote bag, a notebook, and a pen, encouraging a more sustainable approach to study tools.
Waste separation and compostable materials – The school places great emphasis on waste disposal and uses compostable cups for coffee.
Energy efficiency – Heating and cooling systems are modern and environmentally friendly, ensuring more responsible energy use.
Sustainable mobility – Students and teachers mainly use public transportation or bicycles to get around the city, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Commitment beyond classrooms
But the school’s commitment goes far beyond the classrooms. In collaboration with the RECUP association, the school organizes “recovery missions” from time to time! Students visit local markets to collect unsold fruit and vegetables that are at risk of being thrown away. After gathering the produce, they bring it to the distribution table, weigh it, and redistribute it to those in need. A concrete action against food waste and in favor of solidarity!
Becoming a Green Standard School means showing students that even small gestures make a difference. Refilling a bottle instead of buying a plastic one, choosing the bike instead of the car, recycling properly—these habits, repeated every day, create a cleaner and more sustainable world.
World Recycling Day reminds us of something important: change starts with us. And you, what will you do today to make the world a better place?
