Today, April 22nd, is World Earth Day: an important reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the only home we have — our planet. Established in 1970, Earth Day has since evolved into a global movement, bringing attention to environmental issues and inspiring individuals and communities worldwide to take action.
As part of the Green Standard Schools, we at Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Milano take constant action to raise awareness among our students and staff: you can read more about our concrete “green” actions here!
Today, take a moment to consider the beauty and diversity of the planet we call home — the lush forests, pristine oceans, majestic mountains, and vibrant ecosystems. Our well-being is deeply tied to the health of these ecosystems, as they provide us with essential resources and services, including clean air, water, and food.
This year, as we commemorate Earth Day, we’d like to share with you 5 of the best green areas in Milan, which play a crucial role in our big city!
1) Parco Sempione
Nestled in the heart of Milan and right behind the Sforza castle, Parco Sempione is an oasis of greenery and serenity. Spanning over 47 acres, this historic park was originally built as the private hunting ground of the powerful Sforza family, and offers today a picturesque landscape of green lawns, lush trees, and tranquil ponds. Visitors can stroll along tree-lined paths, admire the iconic Arco della Pace, and relax amidst the lush vegetation.
2) Giardini Indro Montanelli
Located adjacent to the bustling Corso Buenos Aires and its many shops, Giardini Indro Montanelli is a peaceful retreat in the heart of Milan's Porta Venezia district. This charming park offers a blend of natural and architectural beauty: visitors can explore its pathways while enjoying views of historic monuments and sculptures scattered throughout the park, like the Natural History Museum or the Modern Art Gallery.
3) Orto Botanico di Brera
The Orto Botanico di Brera is a serene haven for nature lovers and a hub of botanical research and conservation. Founded in 1774 and spanning over 5 acres, this historic botanical garden is nestled within the grounds of the prestigious Brera Academy of Fine Arts. The garden is home to a diverse collection of plant species from around the world, including rare and exotic specimens.
4) Parco Nord
Stretching across the northern outskirts of Milan, Parco Nord is one of the largest urban parks in Europe, encompassing over 600 hectares of natural landscapes and recreational areas. This vast green space offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors of all ages, including cycling paths, hiking trails, and sports facilities. Nature enthusiasts can explore diverse habitats, including woodlands, meadows, and wetlands, while observing a rich array of wildlife.
5) BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi
In the heart of the Isola district, a recently requalified area of Milan, BAM, or the "Library of Trees," is an open-air cultural park that intertwines art, nature, and community. This innovative green space features a curated collection of trees, shrubs, and perennial plants, creating a living library of biodiversity. BAM serves as a vibrant hub for cultural events, outdoor exhibitions, and environmental education, inviting visitors to explore the intersection of art and ecology in an urban oasis. Pro tip: visit it in May to admire the colorful and instagrammable flower beds!
Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to cherish and protect the planet for future generations. By fostering a deeper connection with the Earth and embracing sustainable practices, we can create a healthier and thriving future for our planet and for all living beings!
