Milan, a city rich in history, culture and style, is also a unique film set that has served as the backdrop for countless stories on the big screen. Thanks to Veronica and Roberto's suggestion in our "Italian on air" podcast, we can take an exciting tour through the streets of the metropolis, where some of the most memorable scenes in film history were filmed.
1. Quadrilatero del Silenzio: Cronaca di un Amore
We begin our film tour from the Quadrilatero del Silenzio, specifically from Via Melegari. Here, in the evocative Palazzo Fidia, in 1950, Michelangelo Antonioni created 'Cronaca di un amore'. A work that drew viewers into the mysterious world of love and intrigue. The film is mostly shot in Milan, so other iconic buildings are also glimpsed, such as the Teatro alla Scala and the Planetarium, also in the Porta Venezia area.
Not far away, at 14 Via Mozart, stands Villa Necchi Campiglio, a house-museum that served as the setting for Luca Guadagnino's 'Io sono l'amore'. Starring Tilda Swinton in the lead role, the film introduces us into the life of the Recchi family, turning this location into a cinematic icon.
2. Piazza Duomo: From Comedy to Drama
The majesty of Piazza Duomo has enchanted Italian cinema in different ways. On the one hand, the hilarious encounter between Totò, Peppino and the traffic policeman in 'Totò, Peppino e la... malafemmina' in 1956, a comic scene that still makes viewers laugh today. On the other, the romantic walk between the Duomo terraces in Guadagnino's 'Io sono l'amore', a homage to the scene in Visconti's 'Rocco e i suoi fratelli'.
3. State University of Milan: House of Gucci
For fashionistas, Milan's Università Statale has become an iconic location thanks to 'House of Gucci'. Here, Lady Gaga and Adam Driver had their first encounter in the fascinating world of fashion and family intrigue.
Whether you are Italian or a tourist, Milan will welcome you with its cinematic atmosphere, ready to unveil new details and enchant you with its timeless beauty.
And if you are among our students, as part of the free time activity programme, you can take part in fantastic tours just like this one to discover all the secrets of Milan.
